Our Story: Over 75 Years in the Community

Family Roots

United Auto opened its doors in 1945 by two brothers, Joseph G. (left) and Thomas A. Steet (right.) They came to America with their family from Lebanon and soon started their own wholesale business, the original United Auto Sales of Utica, located just a few miles down the road on Oriskany Boulevard (the former A to Z Auto if you feel like taking a trip to see the original building!)

In the 1970's, demand was growing and the Yorkville area was starting to develop. They soon moved to United Auto's current location on 4994 Commercial Drive to be where the competitors are.

At the suggestion of Joseph G's, son, Joseph A. Steet, they entered into the retail business alongside wholesaling used vehicles.

Their goals have always been to make the car buying process easy for any customer no matter what situation they are in, to treat all customers like family, and above all, to sell quality used vehicles at an affordable price. Through the decades, we’ve grown alongside our community while staying true to our family values.

Growth & Tradition

As Central New York changed, so did we — expanding our selection, adding a full-service department, and becoming a trusted name for used cars near Utica, NY. We are now in our third generation of ownership, by father and son duo, Joseph A. and Joseph T. Steet, along Joe Sr.'s daughter and son in law, Carly Steet Mathias and Brian Mathias, pictured above.

Joe Steet Sr. has been in the car business his entire life, starting at age 11 by reconditioning cars at this very store, United Auto Sales of Utica (then in its' original location on Oriskany Boulevard!) He worked for his Father, Joseph G. Steet, and his Uncle, Thomas "Tony" Steet.

After reconditioning, he eventually moved up to wholesaling vehicles, traveling almost every day of the week to different local and Northeast Auto Auctions including Clifton Park, Syracuse, Manheim PA, and Newburgh. Despite the long hours put on the road, he always put his family first and brought his kids home a treat from the rest stops every night!
